Exploring how opposing energies create strength, stability, lift, and freedom in ballet.
OPPOSITION BUILDS STRENGTH
A closer look at how opposition helps dancers develop control, resilience, and powerful movement.
In ballet, strength is rarely created through force alone. True strength comes through opposition — the dynamic relationship between two energies working against and through one another to create lift, stability, and freedom of movement.
Every great dancer eventually discovers that movement is not isolated to a single muscle or body part. Instead, the body functions as an interconnected system of opposing flows. As one area reaches upward, another presses downward. As the chest lifts, the legs ground. As the body expands outward, the center pulls inward. This balance of opposites creates efficiency, control, and artistry.
One beautiful example of this can be felt through the body’s spiral-like flow of energy. Imagine energy traveling in a figure-eight pattern: beginning from the floor, moving up the back of the leg into the derrière, then transferring through the front of the pelvis and continuing upward through the front of the torso to lift the chest. From there, the energy wraps over the head and returns down the back of the body, under the derrière, transitioning once again to the front of the hips and legs before pressing firmly into the floor. That downward energy into the floor is what allows the body to rise higher.
This is the paradox of ballet technique — the upward movement is strengthened by downward opposition. Elevation is created through grounding. Freedom is created through structure.
The same principle exists in life. We often become stronger not in the absence of resistance, but because of it. Opposition develops awareness, resilience, and efficiency. Just as a dancer learns to work with opposing energies rather than fighting them, we too grow when we learn how to balance pressure with purpose, discipline with freedom, and effort with intention.
In both ballet and life, opposition is not conflict — it is cooperation between forces that ultimately create strength, balance, and growth.
